new year's beautiful smile

New Year’s Resolutions for Your Smile

Let’s make a healthy, beautiful smile your New Year’s resolution. At Heritage Lake Dental, we take the total body wellness approach seriously. As such, we’d like to ensure both your teeth and body stay in tip top shape in 2022.

Schedule Two Dentist Appointments

As we begin the New Year, life can get in the way of a healthy smile. So we suggest scheduling both of your annual dental appointments at once. During these appointments, we will check for cavities and do a thorough teeth cleaning. Afterwards, a polish will be applied to remove any surface stains on your teeth. Then comes flossing, we’ll clean between your teeth to dislodge the leftover food particles and other debris. Once your dentist appointment is complete, we will repeat these steps again in six months to help you achieve a whiter, healthier smile.

Eat Smarter

The health of your teeth and gums depends on what you eat and drink. Consuming too many sugary beverages and not enough nutritious food can increase your risk for tooth decay. When plaque meets sugar in the mouth, it causes acid to attack the teeth, leading to tooth decay. To achieve this new year’s resolution, aim for drinking plenty of water and eating whole grains, lean protein and fruits and vegetables.

Quit smoking

Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death and disease in the United States. Smoking can stain your teeth, discolor your tongue, suppress your immune system and increase the likelihood of gum disease, halitosis, oral cancer and gum recession. We understand quitting is not easy. So, when you’re ready to stop smoking, lean on your support system for encouragement and positive reinforcement. If you’re fighting the urge to smoke, create a healthier distraction, such as exercising, chewing gum or drinking water.

To have the healthiest smile in the new year, combine these practices with brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. Pick one or all three as resolutions for 2022 and see how your smile, and body, will change for the better.
